A 20 year-old Richmond man has been arrested by Metro Vancouver Transit Police and charged following a sexual assault on a young woman at Bridgeport Station in Richmond.
Shortly after 10:30 p.m., on Wednesday, March 19, a 23 year-old woman was standing near the ticket vending machines at Bridgeport Station, when she was approached from behind and assaulted by a man who grabbed her and tried to pull down her pants. When confronted, the man took off on foot towards the bus loop. T-Police arrived minutes later and arrested the man on a bus as it was leaving the area.
Arrested and charged with one count of sexual assault is Balachandran Thushyanthiran, 20 years old, a resident of Richmond. He is not previously known to police.
Thushyanthiran has made his first court appearance and was released on an Undertaking with conditions that include “Not to be found on any Canada Line, Skytrain, Seabus, Coast Mountain bus, vehicle, or property”. His next scheduled court appearance is 9:00 a.m. on April 1, 2014.
The T-Police are committed to maintaining order and ensuring public safety on transit, and have identified sexual offending as one of their priorities in 2014. Any inappropriate behavior that is sexual in nature will not be tolerated, and the T-Police will vigorously investigate these offences to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
