New month means new events to check out in Richmond! From Pirate Weekend at the Cannery to Craig Ferguson and more, here are 10 fun things to do in the city in September.

Richmond Night Market

Richmond Night Market kicking off

  • What: This market draws crowds from across the province, who travel to check out the rows on rows of vibrant cuisine along with the diverse line-up of nightly performances on the 50-foot entertainment stage. There will be over 100 food vendors and 200 retail stalls this year.
  • When: Now to Monday, October 8, 2018
  • Time: Fridays and Saturdays from 7 pm to midnight; Sundays and holiday Mondays from 7 to 11 pm

  • Price: $3.75 (regular admission)

Kwantlen Street Farmers’ Market

  • What: The market offers a rotating selection of food trucks and carts, vendors with local produce, fresh Okanagan fruit, locally brewed beer and BC wines, SPCA certified chicken and eggs, freshly baked French breads and pastries, and natural soap and body care products. Kwantlen St. Farmers Market also features products grown and crafted by local farmers and artisans, highlighting KPU’s own Sustainable Agriculture students.

ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Canada 2018

  • What: Richmond hosts a qualifying competition on the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2018/19 series. Watch some of the top junior skating talent from around the world, including members of the Skate Canada NextGen team.
  • When: Wednesday, September 12 to Saturday, September 15, 2018

  • Where: Minoru Arenas – 7551 Minoru Gate, Richmond
  • Tickets: Online, $10 per day or $25 for a full three-day pass. Admission is free for children ages 12 and under.

Xiaojing Yan – In Suspended Silence

  • What: In this meditative installation, Ontario artist, Xiaojing Yan, navigates natural and cultural realms deeply grounded in Chinese philosophies, myths and folklore. Combining two bodies of work that derive from classical Chinese ink wash painting and portrait sculpture, Yan’s poetic explorations delve into the meaning of spirituality and the transformation of self.

Pirate Weekend at the Cannery

  • What: Pirates (the friendly kind) invade the Cannery in celebration of Talk Like a Pirate Day. The Shady Isle Pirates will set up a pirate encampment inside the historic cannery, with lots of games and swashbuckling fun for the entire family to enjoy. Wear your best pirate gear, or try some from their collection, and be sure to brush up on your pirate-speak before you dare to enter the pirate zone.

Simon Kempston

  • What: Steveston Folk Guild presents Simon Kempston in concert. Described as “one of Scotland’s best songwriters” by The Sunday Herald, Simon performs music that is steeped in the history of folk, blues and Celtic traditions. He will be playing songs from his latest cd “Vanishing act: and from “Onward she travels”.

2018 Grand Prix of Art

  • What: Over 100 artists of all ages and experience levels take part in a day of intense fun and competition, as artists race against the clock in this three-hour painting challenge. The exhibition is open to the public from 3 to 6 pm on Saturday and will remain on display at Britannia Heritage Shipyards National Historic Site until Sunday, September 23 from 12 to 4 pm.

Craig Ferguson – Hobo Fabulous Tour

  • What: A comedy legend in film, television and the stage, Craig will be bringing his hilarious observations with a bit of a Scottish bent to Richmond. Come see the former late-night star as he talks about current events and the absurdities of life in this 18+ show.
