After 25 years with Malcolm Brodie leading the way, the City of Richmond has elected a new mayor.
Rob Howard has been named the new mayor in a tightly contested race that didn’t have a clear frontrunner.
At the time of publication, with all polling stations reporting, Howard pulled ahead of both Alexa Loo and Kash Heed, with nearly 20,000 votes. Loo had nearly 19,000. Brodie did not seek re-election.
Howard is hailed as a businessman and an entrepreneur. He’s also a former Richmond councillor and MLA.
Under the Richmond Forward banner, Howard and the team ran on a platform of accountability and transparency, housing choices, safer streets, community participation, and strengthening the economy.
Richmond Forward is promising to reduce costly permit wait times, fast-track senior housing, make housing more affordable, and develop more options for seniors’ services.
For safety, Richmond Forward wants to bolster the RCMP’s anti-drug D.A.R.E. program and also enhance the Block Watch program.
Richmond Forward also promised to ban supervised injection sites in the city.
