Restaurant Reviews: Vij's

Dec 19 2017, 11:40 am

So this past weekend, I decided to take a recommendation from one the readers of Vancity Buzz lately and headed on over to Vij’s in South Granville. Many thanks to the reader as it was truly a wonderful experience.

Now I did some research and realized that the wait times for this place are egregiously long. I’ve heard stories of individuals waiting upwards to 2.5 hours for a table. So I grabbed a few buddies that weren’t overly irritating, knowing that a long night was in store. Obviously that leaves Skeets and Schwab off the list, besides those guys can barely afford McDonald’s. A few things of note, Vij’s doesn’t take reservations and opens at 5:30pm. I suggest that you line-up prior to the opening if you plan to be seated promptly as it is first come first serve. The Urban Dweller wasn’t so lucky as we waited an 1 1/5 hours.

The wait is part of the experience, as we sat in the lounge partaking in jovial banter whilst sipping on wine and chai. I took a look around a noticed quite a few female waitresses, in fact I believe they all were female. They were also quite good looking, a pleasant surprise. The restaurant had a great vibe and there was a definite buzz in the lounge air as everyone was anxiously waiting to be seated. Before we knew it we were ready to be seated.

Once seated we were promptly served by a cute vivacious young woman. My buddy tried to get her number but he was politely rejected. I ordered the wine marinated lamb popsicles in fenugreek cream curry. Simply fantastic. The food is appropriately priced for a restaurant of this caliber. I was expecting something of a more traditional Indian menu, something more along the lines of something you’d find in Little India or any corner of Surrey. Man was I wrong, everyone at the table agreed it is above and beyond any Indian food they have ever had.

It should also be noted that the owner will come by your table to ask you how your evening is going. That just further reaffirms the passion this man has for his food and restaurant. If you want to get away for an evening of culinary delight Vij’s should definitely be on your list.

Vancouver is a great culinary destination and The Urban Dweller will try out many more restaurants and review them for you the readers of Vancity Buzz.
