Some reel laughs at the JFL NorthWest Comedy Film Series

The inaugural year of JFL NorthWest and the Vancouver International Film Festival have teamed up to bring you the Comedy Film Series from February 18 to 27 at Vancity Theatre.

Movies from creators around the world will be on display, from comedic masterpieces to unauthorized Star Wars remakes. There’s bound to be something to tickle your funny bone and placate the film critic in everyone.

Here are seven great events to look out for when the Comedy Film Series gets underway:

Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of The National Lampoon

  • What: The history of one of the most successful comedy empires in history, from their start as a comedy magazine, to the films that launched a dozen superstars. Never-before-seen footage chronicles how a bunch of wasted college students became some of the most legendary comedians of all time.
  • Where: Vancity Theatre – 1181 Seymour Street, Vancouver
  • When: Thursday, February 18; 6:30 p.m.

Comedy Short Shorts

  • What: A patchwork collection of comedy short films from creators across the Pacific Northwest. The audience votes for their favourite film and, that night, the winning filmmaker will win two tickets to every JFL NorthWest film event, a Sleeman prize pack, and will have their short film screened at Just for Laughs Montreal.
  • Where: Vancity Theatre – 1181 Seymour Street, Vancouver
  • When: Thursday, Feburary 18; 8:30 p.m.

ENTERTAINMENT

  • What: Aging hack comedian Neil Hamburger travels across the Mojave Desert, playing a series of awful shows in dive bars, on his way to reunite with his estranged daughter. A no-holds-barred look into the life of a comedian, and what a life on the road can do.
  • Where: Vancity Theatre – 1181 Seymour Street, Vancouver
  • When: Monday, February 22; 6:30 p.m.

Turkish Star Wars

  • What: When war halted the flow of Western films to Turkey, a crew of ambitious filmmakers set out into the desert to bring their people one of the most beloved sci-fi films of all time. In 2012, a team of Western filmmakers lovingly crafted the movie into what is now called Turkish Star Wars. Don’t miss out.
  • Where: Vancity Theatre – 1181 Seymour Street, Vancouver
  • When: Monday, February 22; 8:45 p.m.

Waiting for Guffman 20th Anniversary with The Sunday Service Live

  • What: Celebrate two decades of Christopher Guests’ classic mockumentary, following the life and times of a small town theatre’s ambitious performance. Featuring a pre-show performance by Vancouver favourites The Sunday Service.
  • Where: Vancity Theatre – 1181 Seymour Street, Vancouver
  • When: Wednesday, February 24; 6:30 p.m.

The Lobster

  • What: Colin Farrell stars in this dystopian love story, in wich single people are arrested and transferred to a weird hotel. If they don’t find a matching mate in 45 days, they’re turned into an animal and released into the woods. No pressure.
  • Where: Vancity Theatre – 1181 Seymour Street, Vancouver
  • When: Wednesday, February 24; 9 p.m.

The Gentlemen Hecklers Present “Road House”

  • What: Vancouver’s Gentlemen Hecklers present a send-up of the Patrick Swayze punch-fest Road House.
  • Where: Vancity Theatre – 1181 Seymour Street, Vancouver
  • When: Saturday, February 27; 9:30 p.m.
