Former ABC councillor Rebecca Bligh, who became an independent earlier this year, has announced her intention to run for Vancouver mayor in 2026.
Bligh’s announcement came out earlier this morning in front of an “enthusiastic crowd of supporters.”
Bligh will run with a team of candidates “committed to working hard every day to make life better for those who call Vancouver home.”
Vote Vancouver is Bligh’s party name, which a statement from her team suggests reflects her commitment to serving the needs and interests of all Vancouverites.
“I’m running for mayor because I am grateful for what Vancouver has given to me and my family but I also know what it feels like when the system doesn’t work for you,” said Bligh in a media release.
“As someone who was able to raise a family and purchase a home in this beautiful city, that reality feels further out of reach for so many.”
Bligh said that Vancouver deserves a mayor that works for Vancouver and its people, “not for photo-ops and not for narrow special interests.”
“Vancouver deserves a mayor who will bring our city together and lead with vision,” she added.
The statement added that Bligh’s approach will be focused on “service, vision and trust.”
Regarding her party’s priorities, Bligh says they’ll be focused on affordability, building homes and working with neighbourhood and communities “to make life better in every corner of the city.”
Earlier this year, Bligh was “ejected” from ABC Vancouver.
“Vote Vancouver will be member and volunteer driven, and will hold nominations for its Council, School and Park Board candidates,” the media release said.
“While she remains a Vancouver City Councillor, it has become clear that she is not aligned with the shared priorities and team-oriented approach that defines ABC Vancouver,” wrote ABC Vancouver president Stephen Molnar in a statement earlier this year.
Confirming I have been ejected from A Better City.
Due to the volume of media inquiries I will be available to speak with media at City Hall today at 3:30 PM
