Gino Odjick’s hometown of Maniwaki, Quebec will be renaming its local ice hockey arena after him.

Last month, 43-year-old Odjick revealed that he was been diagnosed with AL amyloidsis – a terminal illness that causes proteins to deposit in the heart, in effect hardening the organ. He may have only months, maybe weeks to live.

On Monday, the town’s city council unanimously approved a resolution to rename the arena as a way of honouring him.

Currently, Odjick is being treated at Vancouver General Hospital. He played for the Vancouver Canucks for eight of the twelve seasons he was in the NHL.
