Public masturbation on the rise in Vancouver

DH Vancouver Staff Nov 22, 2013 11:41 am

Vancouver Police are investigating recent sexually motivated offences and are advising residents not to wait before they call 9-1-1.

Since the beginning of October, the VPD has responded to a number of prowler calls, and incidents of men masturbating and exposing themselves in public between the hours of 5 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Police are asking the public not to confront offenders and to report all criminal acts, as well as suspicious people and behaviour, immediately to police through 9-1-1.

The VPD takes the report of sexual offences very seriously. The offences are being investigated by the Sex Crimes Unit of the VPD and there has been an increased police presence in the areas where these offences have taking place.

Safety Tips

  • consider installing motion sensor lights outside your home
  • join Block Watch
  • close your window coverings at night so people can’t see inside
  • call 9-1-1 if you hear suspicious noises or see anyone you consider suspicious
