Prisoner serving murder sentence escapes Mission federal prison

Police are attempting to locate a federal inmate who escaped from Mission Institution on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier today, 41-year-old Norman Gilbert Riel was confirmed missing from Mission Federal Institution. He was observed getting into a waiting white suburban as he fled from the institution and departed the scene. No license plate was obtained.

Riel has a criminal record which includes several convictions for robbery and firearms offences in Edmonton and Vancouver. He was serving a sentence for a second degree murder conviction in 1998. In the past, he has been known to travel into the United States to avoid apprehension.

The prisoner is described as:

  • Male
  • 41 years old
  • Metis
  • 5’8″
  • 210lbs
  • Long brown hair (possibly tied in a bun)
  • Brown eyes

An arrest warrant has been issued for Riel. If you observe the man, do not approach him. Call 911 immediately.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Norman RIEL is asked to contact the Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161. You do not have to give your name, address, or your telephone number; you do not have to testify in court.

A cash reward of up to $2000.00 will be paid for any information which leads to the arrest of RIEL.
