Despite what many believe, there is a lot of money in Vancouver. Visit Holt Renfrew, Harry Rosen, Louis Vuitton (the largest one in Canada) and you’ll find they are full of shoppers ready to plunk down thousands of dollars to get the latest high end fashions. This reputation hasn’t gone unnoticed and has convinced the world’s biggest outlet mall developer McArthurGlen to come to Vancouver. The plan is to build a 340,000 square foot outlet mall that will have the world’s leading fashion brands all in one place. The mall will also contain a movie theatre. This is the first such project in North America for McArthurGlen and it’s coming to Sea Island.
The Vancouver Airport Authority is currently in talks with London-based developer McArthurGlen to bring a premium outlet centre to Sea Island (Vancouver Airport Authority has control over Sea Island). The site of the proposed Sea Island outlet mall is next to the BCIT campus on Russ Baker Way.
YVR board of directors are expected to finalize the plan by June. Once finalized it will bring more jobs and is expected to become a destination shopping centre. Will it lure those that frequent the Seattle Premium Outlets? Only time and cost of items will tell, however, keep in mind that this development in Vancouver is expected to be far more upscale than the outlets in Seattle.
This project is just one of many slated for Sea Island. Also on tap are preliminary plans to build a 250-room hotel and business park near Templeton Station. A new 700,000 square foot Canada Post facility is also under construction. That is expected to be complete by 2014.
