Almost 96 hours after the lights began flickering across the South Coast, nearly all B.C. Hydro customers affected by Saturday’s massive windstorm have had their power restored.

According to B.C. Hydro, new updated figures indicate approximately 710,000 customers of its 1.4 million customers on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland lost power due to the windstorm, making it the single largest outage event in the history of the provincial crown corporation.

Of the 710,000 customers affected, 705,000 customers had their power restored within 72 hours.

As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, just over 100 customers in the Lower Mainland remain in the dark from the high winds that knocked down power lines and transformers. Adverse weather conditions caused by the storm fronts have slowed down the restoration process.

“Crews are continuing to restore power to customers each hour,” reads a statement by B.C. Hydro. “However, restoration efforts have been hampered over the last 15 hours by adverse weather. For example, saturated soil in certain areas has made it unsafe for crews to bring in heavy equipment for repairs.”

On an average month, B.C. Hydro crews respond to an average of 2,000 trouble calls a month across the province. But they have already received nearly a month’s worth of calls, with 1,800 storm-related work orders made since Saturday.

Approximately 400 crews were brought in from across the province to work on the power restoration effort.
