British Columbia’s police watchdog is investigating after a crash in Coquitlam that sent six people to the hospital.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC says that the incident occurred on Sunday, December 27, at approximately 9 am. A police officer was conducting a speed radar check on Highway 1 eastbound towards Government Street.

“They observed a grey Dodge Charger allegedly speeding and attempted to conduct a traffic stop,” IIO BC says in a statement. “The vehicle did not stop and exited the highway at Brunette Avenue, where it collided with another vehicle.”

The lone driver of the Dodge Charger, as well as all five occupants of the second vehicle, were taken to the hospital. The extent of their injuries was not specified by the IIO.

The watchdog is now investigating if police played any role in the injuries that occurred.

Anyone who saw, heard, or recorded the incident is asked to contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477.
