Police perform radar gun speed checks on Vancouver seawall cyclists

Radar guns are one of the key tools police use to perform speed checks on motor vehicles. But have you ever seen radar gun speed checks for cyclists?

On Friday, Vancouver Police officers were seen on the seawall at South False Creek, just east of Granville Island, pointing radar guns at cyclists to verify their speed.

Speeding cyclists pose a serious safety risk for pedestrians at certain stretches of the seawall such as crossings. Cyclists should slow down during sunny, warm days when more pedestrians are walking the seawall.

All the while, pedestrians who walk on the seawall’s bike lanes instead of their own designated pedestrian paths are another hazard to everyone involved.

Local cycling enthusiast Chris Bruntlett tweeted this photo taken by his wife Melissa.

Update: According to the Vancouver Police Department, these were volunteers educating people on the 15 km/hr speed limit on the seawall.
