Police are continuing their investigation into an early morning incident involving a man with an axe on Main Street.

At around 8:30 a.m., police received reports of a man with an axe who threatened another man on Main Street near East 51st Avenue.

When police arrived, witnesses advised that the alleged victim had left the area and the man with the axe had gone to a house on East 51st Avenue at Main.

Police went to the home and found the suspect outside of the residence. Upon seeing police, he ran inside the house. Police surrounded the home and attempted to communicate with the man.

Due to safety concerns, the occupants of the house and the neighbouring duplex were evacuated. Main Street between East 50th and 52nd Avenue was closed while police continued their efforts to have the man surrender.

After several hours without contact, police sought a Judicial Authorization from a Justice of the Peace to enter the home and search for the suspect and the weapon.

Around 6:30 p.m., members of the VPD’s Emergency Response Team searched the house. Police discovered that the suspect likely ran out the rear of the residence, immediately upon seeing officers earlier in the day.

Investigators are continuing their search for a 25-year-old Vancouver man and the victim of this morning’s incident.
