Police-involved shooting in Surrey being looked at by independent investigator

The Independent Investigation Office of BC (IIO BC) has been activated after an incident in Surrey where police officers reportedly fired at an individual.

On Wednesday morning, at approximately 4:17 am, the Surrey RCMP received reports of a man chasing another man with a machete in an alley, in the 10600 blocks of 135A street.

According to a statement from the IIO BC, police officers located a man that matched the suspect description.

During an interaction with the male, the IIO BC says that police officers used their firearms, hitting the individual.

Emergency services were called to the scene and the man was then taken to the hospital. Fortunately, his wounds are reportedly non-life threatening. No one else was injured in the incident.

The IIO BC will be leading an investigation into the police-involved shooting, while the Surrey RCMP investigates the initial report and incident.
