Police have been called in to investigate the cause of a devastating fire in New Westminster.
The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) says that they’ll be assisting fire crews in determining the cause of the blaze at Pier Park. The fire started on Sunday evening, with firefighters being called at approximately 7:54 pm.
Crews remain on scene and although the fire has been contained to the old pier, it’s expected to last several more days until the deck can be removed.

“The timber wharf section at the eastern end of the park sustained significant damage,” says NWPD in a statement.
New Westminster Mayor Jonathan Cote said earlier on Monday that older parts of the park “will not be salvageable” and that the big “W” will need to come down.
At this point in time, the cause of the fire is unknown but police are asking anyone with information to step forward.
