Upgraded Metro Vancouver trail has over 200 stairs — and a new scramble to the top

A beloved Metro Vancouver trail just got a serious upgrade, and it’s not for the faint of heart (or quads).
The City of Port Coquitlam is officially launching Phase 2 of the PoCo Climb on Thursday, June 19 at 2:45 p.m., and it’s bringing some major elevation.
With more than 200 stairs spanning from Shaughnessy Street to Western Drive, the expanded trail now climbs from 5 to 75 metres in elevation, offering sweeping views, new trail access points, and a granite boulder “scramble” section designed for thrill seekers.

The newest addition connects more of the city’s outdoor network, including easier pedestrian links to ƛ̓éxətəm (tla-hut-um) Regional Park, making the climb a top-tier destination for hikers and weekend warriors alike.
What to expect from Phase 2 of the PoCo Climb
The upgraded PoCo Climb features:
- A one-of-a-kind granite boulder scramble for those looking to level up their climb
- Unobstructed views of ƛ̓éxətəm (tla-hut-um) Regional Park from a scenic summit landing
- A new pedestrian crossing linking to the regional park trail system
- Safety upgrades to the crossing at Eastern Drive connecting to Skyline Park
“This expansion makes it easier than ever to experience the beauty of PoCo’s trail system while getting in a solid stair workout,” the City said in a press release.
An opening day celebration will take place at the base of the new stair section at the 1200 block of Eastern Drive on June 19 at 2:45 p.m.
The first 100 people to complete the climb will receive a free commemorative towel – plus a few surprise goodies.
No RSVP needed, just show up, stretch, and get ready to climb. Parking is available on Eastern Drive and Western Drive.
