As a story supervisor, Ted Mathot has to know everything about the movie, and be able to answer any questions about the plot. “I’m the protector of the story,” he says. “I have to keep the whole story in my head at all times.”

So what does Pixar consider a “good story?” According to Mathot, there are four main elements: “Great characters, a world that’s believable, a very compelling villain, [and] relatability,” Mathot says.

“We want audiences to go in and relate to what they’re seeing.”

In this interview, Ted talks about how the studio chooses which films to make, shares advice for taking criticism, and reveals how you can get a job at Pixar.
