27 photos of opening weekend on the North Shore mountains

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… for skiers and boarders hoping to hit the slopes close to home.

Grouse Mountain and Cypress fired up the chairlifts on Friday to kick off a hopefully fantastic winter season up on the alpine. With a snow base of over 35cm on both mountains, the cold temperatures made for some lasting conditions that should only be improved by Monday’s arctic blast of wet weather hitting Metro Vancouver.

Up on Grouse, Paradise Bowl, Paradise Jib Park, the Peak, and the Greenway Chairlift are open. On Cypress, skiers can ride Eagle Express – Jasey Jay top to bottom, Upper Maelle Ricker and Panorama, plus Lower Collins and Runway wall to wall off Easy Rider Quad, and the skate park.

As the ski season accelerates, Vancity Buzz will be posting a weekly snow report each Thursday, updating mountain conditions on the south coast. Check out Vancity Snow Report for the latest.
