Photos from last night's Owen Pallett concert at Biltmore

Owen Pallett, best known for his work and subsequent Academy Award nomination on the soundtrack to Her, performed at the Biltmore Cabaret last night. The concert was part of a partnership between Toronto’s Bestival Festival and Fido, a series of free events for the company’s customers in cities across Canada.

Pallett was in fine form, interacting with the audience and taking questions, even ripping into his tumultuous relationship with cellphone companies at one point. Pallett’s solo work is definitely video game inspired, but is a heady mix of loops, amplifications, and live instruments. His voice was surprisingly good and his violin work intricate, both of which helped me get past some of the technical problems of the night.

But the crowd seriously adored every single song, and that may be all that matters. The Biltmore was well occupied but not packed, a testament to our no-show culture whenever something is ‘free’ and voluntary.
