It’s one of the most common things that an NHL fan will yell at their team during a game.
“Shoot the puck!”
Unfortunately for Philadelphia Flyers fans, their team hasn’t been doing a whole lot of that under new head coach Rick Tocchet.
The ex-Vancouver Canucks bench boss is battling a familiar problem with his new club. So far this season, the Flyers rank dead last in the NHL in shots per game, averaging just 23.5.
During their defeat on Sunday against the NHL-worst Calgary Flames, Philadelphia managed just 18 shots on net.
That defeat left a portion of the Flyers’ fan base frustrated with the lacklustre performance under their new bench boss.
“Rick Tocchet hockey… awful,” said one Philadelphia fan.
“Horrible loss to a horrible team, this weekend has deflated any and all hope that this year would be different,” said another.
Tochett style makes the game boring, lack of getting even any decent amount of shots on goal is annoying

Earlier in the weekend, the Flyers lost 5-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs. That loss, coupled with their defeat against the Flames, had fans losing hope for a bounce-back season in Philly.
Philadelphia is a notoriously tough sports market, and fans are already calling for Tocchet to get the boot.
Fire Tocchet dude cant help but have his teams near the bottom in shots.

The Flyers signed Tocchet in the offseason to a five-year deal worth $5.25 million per season, according to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun.
During his two full seasons in charge of the Canucks, Vancouver ranked 29th overall in the NHL, averaging just 27 shots per game. That became a hot-button topic in the 2024 playoffs when the Canucks beat the Nashville Predators in six games despite averaging a paltry 20 shots on net per contest.
Vancouver’s ability to get shots on net sank to a new low under Tocchet last season, as the Canucks averaged just 25.5 shots per game. That was 31st in the NHL, ahead of only the Chicago Blackhawks.
Tocchet’s teams have historically struggled to get shots on net. Over his four years as head coach of the Arizona Coyotes, they averaged the 26th-most shots on net in the league. They were in the bottom three in the NHL during his first and last season in charge of the team.
The Canucks will play Tocchet and the Flyers for the first time in Philadelphia on Dec. 22.
