While most adopters will be able to take their new pet home that day, some of the groups require a home visit to ensure the interested party fits their adoption criteria.

For the first time, PetSmart will have Adoption Ambassadors in its stores to help guide people through the adoption process, including the application process and answering questions about which type and age of pet is best suited to their home and lifestyle.

Since rolling out its in-store adoption program, PetSmart Charities of Canada has helped find forever homes for more than 25,000 shelter pets each year.

It also provides grant funding to registered animal charities.
