Pete Fry the 'iconic' illustrator? Vancouver brewery reveals mayor-elect's contribution

Vancouver mayor-elect Pete Fry is a man of many talents, and following his David vs. Goliath-esque victory, a local brewery gave him a shout-out.

Bomber Brewing, a popular local brewery located at 1488 Adanac St., made a post on Instagram following Saturday’s election win.

The post caption said, “Did you know, before he was our newly elected Mayor of Vancouver, Pete Fry designed the original Bomber logo?!?”

It featured a photo of a much younger Fry with a backwards cap that some in the comments thought was photoshopped. But no, it is very real.

Bomber Brewing called him “Pete Digiboy,” saying he created its logo, which was “iconic” for years.

“It’s also what we referenced when rebranding to our new logo two years ago, maintaining the iconography he created for us,” Bomber said.

In the replies, COPE Vancouver Councillor Sean Orr said, “WHAT.”

We also got in touch with Fry about the connection, who hinted that there may be other “iconic” logos around Vancouver that he was behind.

Fry told Daily Hive Urbanied, “Yes, it’s true, and it’s awesome Bomber put out a post about it — I should go in for a beer!”

He explained that Bomber was started by a restaurateur client of his and his East Van hockey buddies.

“And when they asked me to design a logo, I wanted to give it an old-school classic vibe: a simple wordmark overtop desaturated stripes and solids inspired by old 1950s hockey jersey designs for signature brews,” he explained.

You definitely see that hockey vibe in the logo that Bomber shared on Instagram.

Fry said they rebranded a few years ago but is glad to see the original come back, adding, “It was one of my favourites.”

“I spent years as a graphic designer and illustrator, and was responsible for lots of iconic local designs, some of which still live around town today,” Fry said.

The Vancouver brewery ended its post by congratulating Fry on the win.
