Penticton is often considered a quiet, sleepy town with long hot summers, favoured for its placement between both the Okanagan and Skaha lakes. And while it isn’t normally associated with luxury living, there are some absolute gems hidden within the town, like 587 Vancouver Avenue.

This stunning architectural feat combines the kind of modern luxury you might find in the city with lakeside living in Penticton. Listed by Kevin Chen and Matt Zhang from Oakwyn Realty, designed by Chrissy Cottrell from Curated Home, and marketed by Luxe Design Studio, the home, which has been shortlisted for the 2020 International Interior Design Awards in multiple categories, is currently on the market for $12.8 million.

It’s a pretty penny, but no expense has been spared in the build and design, as the team behind it has pooled their resources and experiences to create the ultimate dream home.

The home even comes with a lifetime membership to the legendary Area 27 Racetrack. When you’re finished racing your supercar on the track, you can then park it on its private turntable in the marble-clad garage to admire it on display.

What really sets the development and sale team apart is the trio’s young, ambitious approach to realty, design, and marketing. Zhang of Luxe Design Studio has a background in design, which allows him to market the home with an artistic flair, while Chen, a Personal Real Estate Corporation (PREC) owner, has worked in the real estate industry for nine years — a collaboration that has led to their holistic approach to selling the home.

Meanwhile, interior designer Cottrell has made sure to bring her tasteful European-inspired design into this monolithic modern home, creating something unique and elevated.

Their combined skills and dedication is clearly evident in this aspirational Penticton home. “It’s spectacular in every single detail — not a single corner was cut in the creation of this project,” Zhang says.

The concrete and steel beam construction has been influenced by European design, where multiple levels and grand staircases emphasize the home’s wow factor. It’s been built with state of the art technological features, too, including its own water purification system, heated floors, and a heated driveway to keep winter frost at bay.

“This home is the epitome of bespoke luxury style,” Zhang says. Every level of the home has been thoughtfully considered, from the parquet hardwood flooring to the geometric ceilings. Different materials play a major factor in the design, where marble is used for both the walls and the flooring, making the space feel texturally rich and layered. It’s so rich, in fact, that there’s over $1,000,000 worth of slab stone alone in this home, not to mention that it boasts multiple six-figure light fixtures, too.

The kitchen feels extraordinarily modern, where black countertops seamlessly join both the overhead cupboards and inset appliances. (The commercial-grade La Cornue stove alone is worth over a quarter of a million dollars!) The space is elegant and modern without being stuffy — the designers clearly had some fun here, evident in the wine racks mounted on top of a Botticelli-esque mural and the zebra-print rug in the dining space.

Creating this home has been as much about making the space inspirational and functional for its future owners as it has been about going the extra mile in terms of luxury and craftsmanship. “It’s been an honour to work with this masterpiece. Not many realtors get the chance to work with such a luxurious and bespoke home,” Chen says.

To keep the home feeling bright and spacious, the designers kept most of the space open-concept, including the main living space.

All of the fixtures and furniture were handpicked by Cottrell, including a charcoal-black fireplace, gold velvet couch, and leather wing-back armchairs that feel cool and luxe, but the ample picture windows keep the space bright and grounded. The gold Okanagan Valley light that pours in certainly helps the ambiance, too.

Beyond this project, Zhang and Chen are excited to continue to bring clients’ dream homes to life: “We help our clients relocate, buy a spectacular lot, and then design and build them a beautiful home. We are currently working with the owner of this home to design and build a few more gems in Penticton to show new potential buyers all of the beautiful nature and views that Penticton has to offer.”

Zhang and Chen have been combining their talents to continue to exceed clients’ exceptions in not only real estate transactions, but also design and building philosophies. Zhang studied and lived in Los Angeles, so he now brings the LA modern design to Vancouver with some West Coast influences.
