UPDATE – Wednesday, February 18: Burnaby RCMP have confirmed the 22-year-old female pedestrian has died. Four others involved in the crash have non-life threatening injuries.
According to witnesses, the incident occurred just before 1 p.m. when a vehicle ran into a bus stop on Canada Way near Beta Avenue where the female pedestrian was waiting for the bus. Another vehicle was also involved – it crashed into a hydro pole at the intersection of Canada Way and Gardner Court.
Fire crews and paramedics arrived to the scene quickly. The vehicles were severely damaged in the crash and five people were taken to hospital.
At this time, Canada Way is closed from Willingdon to Wayburne avenues to allow Burnaby RCMP to investigate the cause of the crash. The stretch of road will likely be closed for the remainder of the day.
BCIT student Char Richo told Vancity Buzz he catches his bus at the exact same bus stop where the crash occurred. He says a little bit earlier and he would have been waiting there.
Those who work in the area assert excessive speed is a major problem on the street.
