An elderly woman was killed late Monday evening while she was attempting to cross a busy Vancouver street.

According to the Vancouver Police Department, the incident occurred just before 10 p.m. when a 75-year-old woman was attempting to cross Oak Street at 53rd Avenue. This intersection does not have a crosswalk and is not controlled by a traffic light.

The woman was struck by a vehicle traveling on the southbound lane and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a 19-year-old Vancouver man, remained at the scene of the incident and cooperated with police in the investigation.

“While it is still early in the investigation, alcohol is not believed to have been a factor,” reads a statement by police. “The vehicle was towed for mechanical testing and officers have seized video from the area to assist in determining the circumstances involved.”

This is the 10th fatal vehicle collision in Vancouver this year, with eight of the collisions involving pedestrians.
