While free parking is already hard to find at Metro Vancouver parks, another popular destination will soon require most visitors to pay.

The District of West Vancouver confirmed that its pay parking program will be expanding to Ambleside Park as of Monday, Sept. 15.

The District noted that pay parking will be enforced in all areas of the park, except in areas where the Squamish Nation is the rightsholder.

Park visitors will be able to pay with the hangTag and PayByPhone mobile apps or using the Impark website. The District of West Vancouver added that there will be signage with QR codes that folks can scan to complete payments.

The District also provided Daily Hive with information on the cost of parking.

“The base hourly rate is $3.75 for parking, or $5.42 per hour after taxes, including a 29 per cent TransLink tax, and a $0.35 convenience fee, charged once per transaction, regardless of length of stay,” said a representative.

However, some visitors will be exempt from the new fees.

Those who have vehicles with a Veterans or Memorial Cross licence plate and vehicles which display a valid accessible parking placard do not have to pay.

Residents of the District of West Vancouver will be eligible for a free annual parking pass, but they must apply online and provide proof of current vehicle registration to a West Vancouver address.

Two physical pay stations will also be set up at Lighthouse Park and Whytecliff Park for a one-year trial. Visitors at these parks can also use the existing parking apps to pay for parking or use an eligible credit card at the pay station.

The same exemptions will apply to those who have a Veterans or Memorial Cross licence plate and vehicles which display a valid accessible parking placard, as well as residents with a parking pass.
