$325-million new acute care building at North Shore hospital opens

After more than three years of construction, the major expansion of Lions Gate Hospital in the City of North Vancouver is now serving its first patients.
The new six-storey acute care tower, named after major donor Paul Myers, officially opened this past Sunday.

This new facility provides the hospital with 108 new beds in private patient rooms, all with ensuite washrooms, along with eight new operating rooms, including a pre-operative and post-operative care areas.
This building grows the hospital’s capacity to a total of 329 beds and 10 operating rooms, plus a range of diagnostic services.
The rooftop of the new building also features a rooftop garden with a walking path, accessible to patients, staff, and visitors.

“It’s terrific news for people living on the North Shore and area that the new patient care tower at Lions Gate Hospital is opening to meet the needs, comfort and well-being of people receiving care,” said Josie Osborne, B.C. Minister of Health, in a previous statement.
“By investing in state-of-the-art facilities around B.C., including the new Paul Myers Tower, we are truly investing in better health outcomes for British Columbians. This is part of our commitment to strengthen B.C.’s public health-care system.”

Under the Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) system, Lions Gate Hospital is the primary hospital facility for Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton, Sunshine Coast, and Bella Bella and Bella Coola on the Central Coast. It offers emergency and critical care, maternity, paediatrics, psychiatric, chemotherapy, cardiac care, palliative care, and rehabilitative services.
Construction on the Paul Myers Tower first began in Fall 2021. The $325 million project is funded by the provincial government, VCH, and Lions Gate Hospital Foundation.
The hospital foundation raised $100 million, including a $25 million donation from local philanthropist and businessperson Paul Myers, who owns North Shore-based Keith’s Plumbing and Heating.
