Every year Vancity Buzz goes overboard in our Halloween coverage and this year is no different. As always our first article is the much beloved Parade of Lost Souls. However, once again this year the parade will not go on as it has in the past. So Public Dreams Society is going back to their roots an hosting an intimate incarnation of Parade of Lost Souls dubbed the Secret Souls Walk.
In these tough economic times, Public Dreams is faced reduced financial support forcing them to limit the size and scope of their annual Hallowe’en event. Parade didn’t happen in 2009 but this year Public Dreams is committed to re-engaging the community in a smaller scale Hallowe’en event. They’re not closing down Commercial Drive, hosting a big street party or launching any fireworks displays but Secret Souls Walk is sure to be an intimate and engaging event that could never happen without Public Dreams’ fervent community support and involvement.
At their fundraiser in September, Public Dreams raised over $10,000, yet to put that success in perspective, Parade of Lost Souls cost over $60,000 to produce in 2008.
Secret Souls Walk comes to life with the resourcefulness and vision of the Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret (www.dustyflowerpot.org). The event is going back to its roots – an engaging, collaborative evening for families in East Vancouver.
On Saturday, October 30th from 5-9pm, at a mysterious locale (only to be revealed on the day), the Dusty Flowerpot crew will be enticing locals into our back alleys, streets, and open spaces to awaken their neighbourly spirits. Participants are invited to come in costume, and in character! Residents in the area have been invited to transform their homes in order to set the stage with our artists.
Public Dreams will be also be hosting an interactive celebration at Britannia Community Centre, between 5pm and 9pm. Start there to discover the location of the walks, or go to the Public Dreams website for more details www.publicdreams.org.
In the weeks before, Public Dreams throwing a series of creative workshops – in shrine building, zombie dancing, shadow puppetry, mask making, group choreography and vocal jamming. Develop your creative skils and give them life at the Secret Souls Walk on October 30th. Register at 604-879-8611.
