Pakistan Festival 2017 hits downtown Vancouver this weekend

Aug 10 2017, 5:28 am

Jack Poole Plaza will be filled with the sounds, smells, and colours of Pakistan this weekend, as the Pakistan Festival returns to Vancouver for its eighth year.

To celebrate Pakistani culture, live music—including Sanam Marvi—will be performed throughout the day, and on-site kitchens will be set up to provide the crowds with delicious cuisine.

“The importance of this event goes beyond providing a venue for families to meet and have fun; it provides Pakistani-Canadians with a voice and platform to promote understanding amongst other communities and faith groups,” said the Pakistan Festival Organizing Committee in a release.

The festival also celebrates August 14, 1947, the day that Pakistan became an independent and sovereign nation.

“It is our hope that through this initiative Canadians of all origins will be able to engage in meaningful dialogue and gain a better understanding of the people of Pakistan while gaining a greater appreciation for the unique culture of Pakistan.”

The festival will feature a fashion show, and include a children’s play area.
