Overnight closures for Metro Vancouver highway start this weekend after snow delays

A major transportation project in Richmond that was delayed by the recent snowstorm is finally proceeding, and the next section of work will impact drivers and commuters for several weekends.
Overnight closures and traffic-pattern changes for Highway 99 at Steveston crossing will take place over three weekends starting on Friday, February 7.
The provincial highway will be closed in both directions overnight on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9 pm to 8 pm (or 5 am on Mondays) while crews dismantle and take away the old Steveston Highway crossing.

Travellers on Highway 99 will need to detour using the highway on/off ramps on the following dates:
- February 7 to 10
- February 21 to 24
- February 28 to March 3
Traffic pattern changes will also occur during the daytime on Saturdays and Sundays, with the highway open with two lanes in each direction.
“Lanes may be shifted to allow crews and heavy equipment to dismantle and remove the old structure,” stated the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in a release. “Drivers are asked to use caution through any detours and obey the construction zone speed limit.
“During the weekend overnight lane closures and daytime traffic-pattern changes, drivers can expect delays and should consider an alternative route.”

Steveston Highway will have two-way traffic during the day and periods of alternating traffic at night. The northbound loop ramp will also be closed throughout the day and night until mid-September.
While no traffic impacts are expected during the week, the Ministry adds that work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled if conditions on the weekend are unfavourable.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure also added that there will be no traffic impacts over the Family Day long weekend.

After the old crossing is fully demolished, construction will begin on the second half of the new interchange.
When complete in Fall 2025, the new Steveston Interchange will have three vehicle traffic lanes for the westbound direction of Steveston Highway and two vehicle lanes for the eastbound direction.
This new structure will also provide separated east-west pedestrian and cycling pathways across Highway 99 on both sides of the overpass and improved access to TransLink’s bus stops.
