10 outdoor events to check out in Vancouver this August

August is here and Vancouver is filled with wonderful outdoor events to enjoy. From Crankworx to SeaWheeze and more, here are ten outdoor events to get you moving in August.

Free Outdoor Movies in Stanley Park

Open Air Cinema

Open Air Cinema/Fresh Air Cinema

  • What: One of the most popular summertime events in the city is back as free outdoor movies return to Stanley Park this summer! The Evo Summer Cinema Series features a four-story inflatable movie screen showing favourites such as Beauty and the Beast Sing-A-Long, Jaws, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Please bring your own blankets and/or lawn chairs and, since it’s a family-friendly event, smoking or alcohol is not permitted. Movie goers are encouraged to walk, take transit, or bike to Stanley Park for the shows  – there will be a bike valet service offered on site each night too.

Nature Watch by Canoe

  • What: Dip your paddle and learn the basics of canoeing while enjoying the sights and sounds on the river.
  • When: August 2
  • Time: 6 to 9 pm
  • Where: Deas Island Regional Park

Nature Walk Damsels and Dragons Inhabitants of the Pond

  • What: Explore the wonderful world of damselflies, dragonflies, and other fascinating inhabitants of the Nature House Pond. Have you seen a dasher, a dauber, or water scorpion? What is a water flea? Join veteran naturalist Al Grass, formerly with BC Parks, for an exciting time.
  • When: August 7
  • Time: 1 to 2:30 pm
  • Where: Campbell Valley Regional Park
  • Cost: Free

Crankworx Whistler 2017

  • What: ​The world’s largest mountain bike festival comes home to Whistler. Whip offs, scavenger hunts, time trials and parties every night. Free for the public to enjoy.
  • When: August 11 to 20
  • Where: Whistler
  • Cost: Free, though you can buy VIP tickets for a number of events here.

SeaWheeze Half Marathon

  • What: The popular lululemon event–often referred to as “the most fun half marathon in the world”– features a weekend of yoga and running including a half marathon around the streets of Vancouver.
  • When: August 12
  • Time: 7 am
  • Where: Coal Harbour

Meteor Shower Watch

  • What: ​​Join astronomers with telescopes as they search the night sky for the Perseids meteor shower. Enjoy lantern-lit trails, games, crafts, storytelling and other entertainment. Camp overnight to extend your stargazing experience. Campers must arrive between 5 and 8 pm.
  • When: August 12
  • Time: 8 to 11 pm
  • Where: Aldergrove Regional Park – Meet at Aldergrove Bowl entrance at 501 Lefeuvre Rd, Abbotsford
  • Cost: Free

Burnaby Lake Nature House

  • What: ​Chat with a friendly park interpreter, pick up a park map, report wildlife sightings and learn about the park’s flora and fauna. Stroll through the butterfly garden to discover which plants attract these colourful insects.
  • When: ​Weekends and statutory holidays
  • Time: 10 am to 4 pm
  • Where: Burnaby Lake Regional Park – 4519 Piper Ave, Burnaby
  • Cost: Free

PNE Donut Dash

  • What: Vancouver’s tastiest race, where runners will be energized with tasty treats throughout the course, including mini donuts.
  • When: August 20
  • Time:  9 am
  • Where: Empire Fields
  • Register: Online until August 13, $30-$45

Hands-On Scientist Series: Tenacious Turtles with Andrea Gielens

  • What: ​​​Delve into the secret lives of park wildlife as local scientists share presentations and hands-on research techniques.
  • When: August 30
  • Time: 6 to 8 pm
  • Where: Kanaka Creek Regional Park
  • Registration: Online, $8 per adult, $4.25 per child/youth/adult 65+

Mat Collective Free Yoga

  • What: Returning for its second year, Mat Collective started as a yoga mat recycling program. Now, the program will offer free yoga indoor and outdoor classes every day all summer long. Mat Collective offers five classes: Hatha, Flow, Power, Kundalini, and Yin. The classes are designed for all levels.
  • Where: Classes take place at Kitsilano Beach Park 1499 Arbutus Street and 95 East 32nd Avenue in Vancouver. Check the full schedule here.
