Opinion: Christy Clark to Run in Westside-Kelowna

Dec 19 2017, 3:39 pm

Premier Christy Clark will run in the riding Westside-Kelowna after the Ben Stewart stepped aside so that she could have a seat in the legislature. If Christy Clark is elected, she would be the third Premier to represent Kelowna and the Okanagan in the legislature after both WAC Bennett and Bill Bennett held ridings in the Okanagan during their time as Premier.

Westside Kelowna is considered a safe BC Liberal riding as Ben Stewart was elected with more than a 20-point margin from his closest challenger the BCNDP, in both the 2009 and 2013 election.

Green Party leader Jane Sterk has announced she will not run a candidate against the Premier citing the outcome of the election in which the BC Liberals won re-election handily. Sterk also went on to say that it would be in the best interests of the province to allow Christy Clark to gain a seat in the legislature.

Adrian Dix and the NDP however seem to be continuing with the NDP principle of developing party positions on a fly. David Eby coming off a victory on May 14 and seemingly feeling arrogant vowed the NDP would run an aggressive campaign against the Premier wherever she ran. Shane Simpson however said that the NDP should not run an aggressive campaign against the Premier in the upcoming by-election.

Regardless of parliamentary convention, It’s petty of Adrian Dix and the NDP to engage in an aggressive campaign against a Premier whose party was elected to a majority government less than a month ago. The NDP had an opportunity to wage an aggressive campaign against Christy Clark and the BC Liberals during the general election and the voters in Kelowna-Westside and in 48 other ridings chose the BC Liberals over them. But now in the face of humiliating defeat Adrian Dix wants to save face by winning a riding the NDP were resoundingly defeated in a month ago.
