Vancouver indie music fans have been patiently waiting for Oh Wonder to make their first trip to the city since the debut of their self-titled album back in September 2015.
First deciding to make and release their own music on their own terms in September 2014, the two London-based band members Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West made a decision to self produce, mix, and release a new song every month for the following year culminating in a completed album. Staying true to their word, the duo gained a huge following as they worked on their project and have been deemed incredibly successful considering their unorthodox release method.
Just as the sold out audience of the historic Commodore Ballroom was beginning to feel antsy, the stage filled with fog as Vander Gucht and West appeared on stage. With high expectations set for a sonically perfect performance, the duo easily met and surpassed them.
Their seemingly effortless harmonies blended together like butter on hot toast; melting into the heads and hearts of everyone present. Backlit by an LED “OW” on stage, Oh Wonder was met with loud cheers and enthusiastic arms as the crowd provided a word for word backtrack to almost every song.
Highlights from the show included the performance of the lead singles, “Lose It,” and “Without You,” as well as the balad, “All We Do,” which Vander Gucht dedicated to anyone in the crowd working towards their goals.
Oh Wonder performed at the Commodore Ballroom on May 28.
