Odd Future at Vogue Theatre Oct. 3rd

Odd Future or OFWGKTA (short for Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All), is a ten-member indie rap collective from L.A. Led by Tyler, The Creator. They bring to mind a younger, edgier and out there form of rap in the midst of all the mainstream rap. At times they have been compared to The Wu-Tang Clan, perhaps due to the sheer size of their collective. However, I don’t remember the Clan skateboarding in their videos and rhyming about drugs, rape and gore like Odd Future.

In fact it’s the very subject matter that has led to either widespread acclaim or criticism about the crew. Notable rappers like Jay-Z, Kanye West (who tweeted that “Yonkers” by Tyler, The Creator was video of the year, check it below) and Pharrel Williams praise the raw and creativity coming out of the Odd Future camp. Others musicians, like Tegan and Sara have dismissed Odd Future as violent, homophobic bullies.

Are they creative geniuses? Or just fowl mouthed teenagers? Whatever your thoughts about ODD Future may be you got to give it to them for doing something different in the rap game.

Ranging from the age 16 to 20,  members Earl Sweatshirt, Mike G, Left Brain, Hodgy Beats, and Tyler, the Creator started making music along with collaborators Taco, Matt Martians, Domo Genesis, Syd, and Jasper Dolphin in 2007. The crew’s crude sense of humor and confrontational subject matter earned them a huge underground following, and put them on “top artists to watch” lists.
