Not Your Typical Vancouver Holiday Video

A visitor to our fair city Thomas Stratmann filmed his whole stay in over 600 clips and produced a music video from the footage. The little movie is the official music video of “The Very First Teenager”, an electro DJ duo from Hamburg (the town in Germany where he studied).

Here is what Thomas had to say about the making of the video:

In autumn 2010 I felt I had the need to leave my home country to see an other part of the world, this was because I always had that desire. A year before in Hamburg I became friend with a guy from Vancouver called Trevor. I promised to visit him one day because he was always wooing me with tales of life in British Columbia.

I applied for an internship in Vancouver and got a contract from the design studio cause+affect.
From the beginning I wanted to document my journey but I didn’t want to do a stupid holiday video. So I got the idea to film everything from my own, direct point of view and bought a small head camera.

I had no script, no storyboard, just my camera and the inspiration of this impressive town. No scene is staged, it’s just the way of life and the beauty of feeling free. I wanted to produce a video with an authentic look. The scenes should try to reflect Vancouver’s spirit and remind the people of their own town experience.

Back in Hamburg I got the idea to use the footage for a music video. I didn’t want to pick any random track, I was searching for something new and unique. A few days later I was sitting on my roof with some friends having a couple of beers, while we were enjoying the evening sun.

One of my friends brought his laptop to play some new tunes. He told me about a DJ duo from Hamburg and started playing The Very First Teenager…

After I finished the video, I handed it in as a free, creative project at my design school. From then on there were a lot more people who want to explore Vancouver.
