The winners for the inaugural year of the provincial community music program “Sing Me a Song” have been announced, with North Vancouver’s Parkgate Singers taking home top honours in the Open Category.

“Sing Me a Song” is a part of the upcoming celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017. Schools, community choirs and amateur musical groups were invited to write and sing an original song inspired by the “Canada 150” theme.

“Congratulations to this year’s winners,” said Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. “We have some outstanding student and amateur musicians in British Columbia and it was wonderful to see them come together in community spirit and celebration.”

The 2014 winners

In the Under 11 Category, Little Mountain Elementary School in Chilliwack won with “My Canada”.

“Here’s To Us All” by Kylie Fonacier and Pinetree Secondary School Vocal Jazz in Coquitlam took home the honours in the Under 16 Category.

And, in the Open Category, “Our Canada” by the Parkgate Singers in North Vancouver.

Guichon will visit each group to present the trophy and a $1,000 prize to be put toward their music program or other worthy causes in their community.

Entries were scored on musicality, spirit and originality by a panel of musicians including; Louise Rose, choral director and music maker; Maureen Archambault, musical director of Youth Choir 61, the Honour Choir of the Greater Victoria School District; and Heather Pawsey, opera singer and artistic director of Astrolabe Musik Theatre.

“Sing Me a Song” will kick off once again this coming autumn, with submissions due in the early part of spring 2015. For more information on the program visit: www.ltgov.bc.ca
