A popular North Vancouver bridge and attraction was just named one of the most beautiful in the entire world.

Time Out recently ranked the 19 most beautiful bridges in the world, and the Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver was one of the selections.

Capilano Suspension Bridge, initially built in the late 1880s, ranked #9 on Time Out’s list.

The media and hospitality business says that the bridge is “not for the faint of heart (or fear of heights), but the views are worth every step.”

When it was first built in 1889, the bridge was made of hemp rope and cedar planks.

“Now steel cables make it strong enough to hold, say, 75 full-grown elephants,” the Capilano website states.

“Over the past 130 years, visitors from every country on earth have come to take in its swaying views,” it adds.

Time Out also offers some history about the bridge, saying, “The 137-metre suspension bridge swaying over the Capilano River was based on indigenous engineering insights from August Jack and Willie Jack Khahtsahlano paired with Scottish designer George Grant Mackay in 1889.”

Time Out adds that the bridge was upgraded in 1953 to “help visitors to safely admire the surrounding temperate forest.”

Special seasonal events are held at the North Vancouver bridge, like the current ‘Love Lights’ experience to celebrate Valentine’s Day, which runs till Feb. 22. Capilano also offers a spooky experience called Canyon Frights and a Christmas experience called Canyon Lights, among other festivities.
