Norovirus outbreak at Delta Secondary School, 300+ students and staff sick

The Fraser Health Authority reports that more than 300 students and staff at Delta Secondary School in Ladner are experiencing what clinically appears to be the Norovirus.

Health officials are working towards confirming the outbreak. In the meantime, the school is undergoing enhanced cleaning, and students and staff who are experiencing symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea are being asked to stay at home.

This gastrointestinal virus, found in the stool and vomit of infected people, is highly contagious and very unpleasant, but it usually passes after 24 to 48 hours in otherwise healthy individuals. Those that are sick should get plenty of rest and liquids, and stay at home for two days after their symptoms stop.

People can become infected with the virus in several ways, including through direct contact with another person who is affected (sharing food or eating utensils) and touching contaminated surfaces or objects.

Spread of the infection can be limited by practicing enhanced hand-hygiene and being mindful of cough and sneezing etiquette.
