Goalie tandems win Stanley Cups

Today, the Vancouver Canucks sit in a very enviable situation. Young and terrific Schneider with seasoned and gold-medalist Luongo, give Vancouver a dangerous goalie duo. The pair of Canucks can push each other to new levels akin to many previous Cup-winning goalie tandems. Many hockey fans would agree that goalies can oftentimes win championships.

In four of the past six years, the Stanley Cup winning goalie had a very capable partner either to share games, spark competition to create momentum, or have sitting on the bench eyeing the pipes creating motivation.

2011: Boston Bruins
Tim Thomas 1.98 GAA | Tuukka Rask (waited in the wings)

2010: Chicago Blackhawks
Antti Niemi 2.63 GAA | Corey Crawford (waited in the wings)

2008: Detroit Red Wings
Chris Osgood 1.55 GAA | Dominik Hasek 2.91 GAA

2007: Anaheim Ducks
Jean-Sebastien Giguere 1.97 GAA | Ilya Bryzgalov 2.25 GAA

Looking at the list above, I would bet Canucks goalies Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider have more than enough potential to perform at the level of previous goalie tandems. Further, they already get along great.

Enough Luongo trade talk – time to focus on the Cup.
