NHL anthem singer replaces ‘O Canada’ lyric with line from ‘America the Beautiful’

“God sheds his grace on thee” and “We stand on guard for thee” are more or less the same, right?

American anthem singer Jill Schackner accidentally changed some of the words to ‘O Canada’ with a line from ‘America the Beautiful’ during last night’s game between the Winnipeg Jets and the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

Shortly after, she took to Twitter to apologize for the embarrassing mix-up, saying “Hey Canadians! So sorry that I accidentally changed some words in your national anthem tonight. It was truly an honest mistake, promise.”

 

Of course, this isn’t the first time an American has botched the lyrics to the Canadian national anthem or even its melody. Check out this rendition of ‘O Canada’ during a CFL game at Las Vegas in 1994 – this was a period of American expansion for the Canadian league:
