New Year, New You - Detox Your Skin

Dec 19 2017, 9:17 am

Now that the holidays are over, we’re all ready to make some changes for the upcoming year. Most of us focus on being healthier; we try to focus on clean eating, working out and ridding ourselves of bad habits.  A month full of indulging in desserts, your moms home cooking and consuming copious amounts of alcohol will leave your skin looking dull and perhaps with a few unwanted blemishes. Here’s to putting a fresh face forward for 2014!

First things first, suck all unnecessary gunk out! Pore strips and face masks are the way to go. I strongly suggest the Active Charcoal face mask by Origins.  The charcoal acts like a magnet to draw out deep dwelling pore-cloggers and the White China Clay absorbs environmental toxins. Since this is a deep cleansing mask using a pore strip right after might result in potential skin damage. Either wait until the next day to use one or use a normal, gentler face mask prior to using a pore strip.

Lack of sleep, stress, and too much sun exposure are some causes linked to dry, dull skin.  Apples and fruits containing vitamin C, such as oranges and pomegranates, and leafy green vegetables like spinach and cilantro, which contain vitamin A, will help repair skin and bring the glow back to your face. In addition to incorporating these foods into your diet, using a product to help aid in dullness and dehydration will be greatly beneficial.  I’ve been using the toner and brightening cream from the Ultimate Aqua Blanc line by Racinne. Alongside brightening my skin, I found that it also helped reduce the appearance of my hyper-pigmentation/dark spots as well as minimized the appearance of my pores.

Locking in moisture is the next step!  Drinking lots of water is a must for healthy skin.  Humidifiers and warm, NOT hot, showers will also help aid in hydration.  A good face cream is essential in repairing your skin.  Oily skin needs moisture too! It may sound strange but if you have oily skin it’s likely that it is producing that oil due to dryness.  I would recommend a moisturizer such as Vanishing Cream by Lush Cosmetics, its lightweight formula containing lavender and witch hazel will help balance your skin and bring it back to normal.  As far as dry skin goes, you’ll want to invest in a heavy cream that will penetrate your skin deep down.  Your skin is your body’s first defense against the elements; sun, wind and cold weather will leave your skin feeling dry and looking dull. There are plenty of moisturizers on the market and it is my advice that you explore your options.  Shops such as Kiehls, Lush and Sephora are more than happy to give you some samples to try out in order to find out what works best for your skin.  I can’t say it enough but drinking water will benefit you in more ways than healthy skin!

Until next time, your friendly, neighborhood beauty addict!
