New Westminster police are searching for two suspects following a harrowing robbery, in which a taxi driver was threatened with a gun and an axe.

The robbery happened Thursday, July 2 around 2 a.m. at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Ash Street.

The two suspects originally flagged the cab in Burnaby, demanded the driver pull over once they reached 5th Avenue and Ash. One produced a handgun, demanding cash. The second suspected then produced an axe, putting the driver in a choke hold and demanding his wallet.

“The victim was cooperative throughout, which likely helped him avoid any injury in this circumstance,” said NWPD media relations officer, Acting Sergeant Jeff Scott.

After getting the money the two fled the scene on foot.

The first suspect is described as a skinny Caucasian male with an unknown tattoo on the left side of his neck. He was wearing a navy blue baseball hat and a light colored jacket.

The second suspect is described as a darker skinned Caucasian male who has a heavy build with blonde hair. He was wearing a white Adidas track jacket.

If you have any information about either suspect, or about the incident, please contact New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
