New Westminster police are investigating the drowning death of a two-year-old child.

Officers responded to a call for help in the 300 block of Stanley Street, for a suspected drowning on June 7 at approximately 11 pm.

New West police say that the child was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

“We’ve given the family all the support that we have available to help manage this tragic time in their life,” said media relations officers Sgt. Jeff Scott in a release.

Scott added that the Major Crime Unit is investigating the case with the BC Coroners Service to determine the cause of death. Currently, foul play is not suspected.

“This tragedy affects us all, and our thoughts go out to the family,” said Scott.
