New Vancouver eatery launches super snackable happy hour and brunch menu

Well, the wait is officially over.

Vancouver’s newest eatery Social is now open and located at 1812 Commercial Drive.

The Drive’s latest addition is a comfy space, but also super trendy and modern, which separates it from many other establishments in the area. The room is multi-leveled with a beautifully decorated bar top decorated with green trim and potted plants, giving the space a warm feeling as soon as you come through its door.

Possibly our favourite part of Social is the happy hour and weekend brunch. Are there four better words in the English language? With available brunch on the weekends, a cheap happy hour, and big screen TVs behind the bar, Social is a perfect spot to hang out all day with friends and maybe watch the football game.

On the brunch menu, available from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday and Sunday, you’ll find creative twists on the classics you know and love. Feel confident ordering something lighter to make room for more mimosas with the yogurt parfait with peanut crumble.

Or, go all in and try the croque madame with ham, gruyere, and bechamel on sourdough or the double stacked pancakes with a side of bacon. Yes, of course there’s avocado toast, but the one at Social has lime chili mix, sprouts, and sumac. Go hungry.

The happy hour occurs twice a day: 2 pm to 5 pm and then 9 pm until close. Prices for happy hour start at an absurdly low $5 and include both food and drinks.

Some of the happy hour eats, with options for both meat-lovers and vegetarians, include braised beef sliders, quesadillas, and cauliflower bites with gojuchang and black sesame. We repeat: go hungry.

Cheap drinks on this mouth-watering happy hour menu include craft lager and pale ale from Russell Brewing Company and a merlot and a chardonnay straight from the Okanagan. Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Vancouver happy hour (and in Little Italy no less) without a perfectly stirred negroni cocktail.

Winter is almost here, and although that typically means the end of patio season, this isn’t the case at Social. Not only is it one of the only rooftop patios in the area, but it’s a covered one, too. The seating inside is additionally spacious, with plenty of room to get cozy in a booth or sidle up to a table to enjoy delicious food, beer on tap, and creative cocktails.

You’ll enjoy the decor and friendly staff at any time of the day, but definitely go early and stay a while because the food menu transforms throughout the day. Outside of happy hour, the starter menu consists of the classics done right, like salad rolls and four different flavours of chicken wings, but also exciting innovations like tuna oshi with pickled jalapeno.

For every bright, beet salad, there’s a perfectly dressed cheeseburger, and for every fresh poke rice bowl on their menu, there’s a delicious tuna melt. With main dishes like the peppercorn steak and spaghetti pomodoro with whipped ricotta, you’re bound to become a regular at this new neighbourhood spot.

Social is bright, spacious, fronted with huge windows and big bold letters that invite you in and make you feel instantly welcome.

You can enjoy this great new space and still stay in your bubble because Social is accepting small group bookings over the holidays on the enclosed upstairs patio. Just contact [email protected] for more information.

Social distancing is definitely still in full swing, but that doesn’t mean we can’t feel social while doing it.
