People were saddened last year when the City of Vancouver took a pair of boltcutters to the Love Locks that adorned the Burrard Bridge. But now, the trend has reemerged in False Creek.
For decades, couples have been locking themselves together and literally throwing away the key with padlocks featuring names or initials covering bridges and other structures across Asia and Europe. For seemingly just as long, city officials have taken offence to the quirky tradition.
In Paris, the thousands of locks covering the Pont des Arts were taken down in order to preserve the architectural heritage of the city. In Vancouver, city officials stated that they posed a safety hazard to the people and boats below the Burrard Bridge of falling keys and improperly locked up locks.
Many were disappointed by the removal of the lovebird tradition, but for now, one can enjoy the locks out in False Creek. They are attached to a chain link fence just east of the Plaza of Nations on the False Creek seawall.
It’s been suggested that a designated spot or fence should be allocated in Vancouver so couples can partake in the fun, global expression of love. What do you think?
