New ICBC discount now available for eligible B.C. drivers

Eligible drivers in B.C. will now be able to take advantage of a new ICBC usage-based discount.

In April, the provincial Crown corporation announced that individuals driving less than 15,000 km per year will be eligible for the discount on their optional insurance premium.

Eligible drivers who meet these criteria could save 10 to 15 per cent on select ICBC optional coverages. The amount will depend on how much they drive during the one-year policy term.

In a previous news release, David Wong, ICBC’s president and CEO, said that cost savings are top of mind for drivers in British Columbia.

“We know many of our customers are interested in usage-based insurance with cost savings being the top motivating factor, and it’s our goal to provide affordable auto insurance to the people living in B.C.,” stated Wong.

“Driving less not only lowers your risk of getting into a crash, it’s also better for the environment. We hope more of our customers will be able to take advantage of the new Optional distance-based discount now available.”

The new policy is available to anyone who renews their Optional coverage on or after June 1, 2025, as long as you have two photos of the odometer taken a year apart, proving you drove less than 15,000 km the previous year.

The discount applies to the following optional ICBC coverages:

  • Extension Third Party Liability
  • Collision
  • Comprhensive
  • Specified

The ICBC website provides more information on how to submit your odometer reading.

“ICBC’s distance-based discounts may benefit you if you do not regularly use your vehicle,” stated the insurance provider on its website.

“For example, if you only drive on evenings and weekends, use public transportation to commute to school or work during the week, or simply have a second vehicle that’s not used very often.”

Drivers must also have an eligible vehicle, as motorcycles, RVs, collector vehicles, and select other vehicles are not included in the discount offer.
