New BC Place Roof Budget Finally Released

Well actually it was released a few days ago but with all this Olympic Village hoopla it didn’t get the attention it deserved. The total cost for the roof, renovations and seismic upgrades will be approximately $365 million. Some of which will be recovered by selling some of the land adjacent to the stadium, I hear it is going for top dollar these days. This thing should have been built and ready for the 2010 Olympics, Gordo dropped the ball but at least he is still going ahead with the renovations. Further, with the Whitecaps set to join the MLS the upgrades are needed to them that coveted spot. Of course the soccer specific stadium built solely with private funds, but of course the city didn’t want that. They like to build things with cost overruns and on the backs of taxpayers.

Naysayers will always point at the cost of the “birds nest” stadium in China being built for under $500 million. What those asshats fail to realize is that was built on the backs of cheap Chinese labour who get their power from the great Chinese solar burrito. Something like that would cost billions here. In reality, a brand new stadium with a retractable roof would cost somewhere in the range of $600 – $750 million.
