Neglected dog saved from squalor thanks to Metro Vancouver petition

A husky that reportedly endured “severe neglect” is now in the safe care of the BC SPCA thanks to a Metro Vancouver petition raising awareness about the dog’s dire condition.
Earlier this week, a petition was created on change.org titled “Save Johnny the Husky in Port Coquitlam.”
The campaign was started by Bella Crossman, who told Johnny’s heartbreaking story.
“Johnny the husky is enduring severe neglect and urgently needs help. He’s confined to a small, filthy room where he’s left covered in his own urine and feces, without regular access to clean water, outdoor time, or human affection,” wrote Crossman in the petition’s description.
“Johnny is never taken on walks — something that is absolutely essential for huskies, a high-energy and social breed that requires daily physical and mental stimulation. Instead of running, playing, and engaging with people, Johnny is isolated and suffering.”
Crossman also claimed that the BC SPCA intervened briefly in 2023.
“They cleaned up his space and took him on a couple of walks — but as soon as the visits stopped, the neglect returned,” they explained, noting that Johnny was once again exposed to “miserable conditions with no quality of life.”
Crossman added that the petition was started to raise awareness of Johnny’s situation and to have the BC SPCA step in to save him.
“Sign and share this petition to help give him the life he deserves,” concluded Crossman.
The cause quickly gained traction as hundreds of people signed on, hoping to get Johnny the help he needed.
Many also commented, sharing their concerns.
“No animal deserves this kind of abuse. They are only with us for a short amount of time. Why make that time cruel, depressing, neglectful, and harmful? All animals deserve to love and be loved, and should know what happiness feels like,” stated one individual.
“This sweet animal deserves to live a dignified life. Please take action so that this boy can live out his remaining days knowing a better life,” added another.
In a statement to Daily Hive, a BC SPCA representative said it appreciated the “community member’s concern for this dog.”
“The BC SPCA can confirm that this dog is now in our care,” they said.
Daily Hive reached out to Crossman for further comment but did not hear back before publication.
