Federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair held a rally in Jack Poole Plaza in Vancouver where he discussed his party’s platform, in particular where senior citizens are concerned.
He said the NDP would work with the provinces to strengthen the Canada Pension Plan, since the population of seniors in the country is set to double over the next 25 years.
“We’re also going to defend the pensions that Canadians have been promised,” he said in the rally.
“New democrats will protect pension income splitting and provide increased flexibility for retirement income fund withdrawals.”
Mulcair said he planned on lifting 200,000 seniors out of poverty through an increase to the guaranteed income supplement.

He also took shots and both Harper’s Conservative government and Trudeau’s Liberals, saying the Conservatives have put the country into a deficit and the Liberals would not balance the budget, whereas that’s a priority for the NDP.
It was announced today that Canada is not in a deficit and has a nearly two billion dollar surplus for the first time in eight years.
